We've received some news that's both good and bad. There will be some drastic changes made to our school's playground areas. The Township of Medford would like to build new practice and game fields for all of the soccer, baseball, softball and lacrosse teams. Our superintendent agreed that it was a wonderful idea, because Kirby's Mill students can also use the fields during P.E. class. However, both the K-2 playground and the 3-5 playground will have to be demolished! |

Dr. McAneny has asked you, the fourth grade I.M.P.A.C.T. team, to create a new playground proposal. You will work with a partner to choose playground equipment, draw a to-scale layout, and calculate the approximate total cost of the playground installation. Dr. McAneny shows you a map of the school grounds. The area for the new playground is marked by a perfect square. "We wanted to give the kids plenty of room to play, so each side of this square is 200 feet" he said. "The shape of the new design is your choice, but it must fit within these boundaries. Please keep in mind that children need room to run around, and they need to be able to play safely. Lastly, remember that the playground should be appropriate for children ages 5-10. Thank you and good luck." |

Step 1: Make a rough to-scale drawing on graph paper. Include general areas for equipment, plus special areas such as sandboxes, etc. Your only limits are the limits of your imagination! |
Step 2: Use the following websites to select the exact equipment you need for your playground. Use the Word document in the Share drive to help you organize the information. |
| Swing Sets | Climbers | ||||
| Outdoor Music | Play Structures | ||||
| Spring Riders | Equipment Sets | ||||
| Sports and Fitness Equipment | Sand and Water Sets | ||||
Step 3: Use the following websites to search for any other materials you'll need to build your playground. (ex: sand for the sandbox and lumber to enclose it). Use the Word document in the Share drive to help you organize the information. |
| Wood Posts and Timber | Play Sand | ||||
| Fences | Tetherball | ||||
| Basketball nets | |||||
Step 4: Use the Excel Spreadsheet in the Share drive to create a budget for the plan. |
Step 5: Draw a final to-scale drawing of your new playground. |
Step 6: Create a coversheet for your presentation. It's always best to have a professional looking document when you are presenting a proposal. |
Dr. McAneny is impressed with your efforts! He asks, "Do you enjoy this challenge? What was easy about it? What did you find difficult? Would you change anything about this project?" "Thank you very much for your help! I'm sure the students of Kirby's Mill School will enjoy their new playground!" |
