Rapa Nui:  Easter Island
  • Located off the coast of Chile in South America
  • The first inhabitants probably settled on the island in about 400 AD
  • First European to visit was Jacob Roggeveen, who visited on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1722
  • Almost 1,000 statues on the island, some reaching 14 feet tall
  • Who built them and why?

Bermuda Triangle
  • In Atlantic Ocean near Bermuda, Miami, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Introduced in the 1950’s in the magazine Fate
  • Planes and ships have disappeared without explanation
  • What happens to the planes/ships?  Has wreckage been found?

The Egyptian Pyramids
  • Between 81-112 pyramids in Egypt
  • Burial monuments
  • Pharaohs ordered them built as early as 2630 BC
  • How were they built?  Who built them?

Stonehenge
  • Located in Salisbury Plain, England
  • Most stones are about 13 feet high, 6.5 feet wide and 3 feet deep
  • The earliest section may have been built in 2950 BC
  • Who built it and why?

  • Located above the Urubamba Valley in Peru
  • Created by the Inca Empire around 1450
  • Why was it built?  Why was the location chosen?

Amelia Earhart
  • First woman to fly coast to coast nonstop
  • In 1937, attempted to be the first person to fly around the world
  • Plane was lost and no wreckage was found
  • What happened that night?

Nazca Lines
  • Located in the Nazca Desert in Peru
  • Hundreds of figures, from designs to animals
  • Created between 200 BC and 700 AD
  • Cannot be recognized except from the air
  • How and why were they made?

Crop Circles
  • First recognized in the 1980’s
  • Stalks of wheat, grass, etc. are bent close to the ground to flatten the design
  • Who is making these shapes and why?
