Introduction
 
Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan is a story about two children who are being raised by their widowed father.  Papa decides he needs help to care for the children and do household chores so he advertises in the newspaper for a wife.  His letter is answered by Sarah Wheaton of Maine, who is invited to come to Kansas by Papa, Anna, and Caleb.
 
Task
Welcome to the Sarah, Plain and Tall   Web Quest.  As you journey through your quest you will have the opportunity to explore Sarah's world.  Your adventures will take you on a state scavenger hunt, collect facts about states, examine seashells, and decorate wildflowers.  How do you think Sarah and the Wittings, who are from very different backgrounds, will be able to live together as a family?   You will need to open a new Microsoft Word document to record your findings.  Remember to save!!
 
Process
Vocabulary
Using on the vocabulary words  from the book, write an Acrostic poem in Microsoft Word.  Before you begin, find the definition of your word using www.answers.com  Add a graphic.

State Scavenger Hunt

Sarah moved from Maine to Kansas.  Discover information about her two states.  Using Stately Knowledge, find the following information about Maine and Kansas:

  • List 3 historic sites in the state

  • Identify the state's region of the United States

  • Describe the climate of the state

 

Seashells

Sarah shares her love of the sea with Anna and Caleb.  When she arrives from Maine, she brings each of the children a seashell.  Describe two facts about Seashells.
 

Wildflowers

Sarah loved flowers and collected the wildflowers from the Kansas prairie. 
She wanted to dry the flowers so they would have flowers during the winter.

  • Visit the Kansas Wildflower and Grasses Site.  Select two wildflowers and list 4 facts about each flower.  Copy and paste a photograph of your flowers into your Word document.
At this point, you should have a Microsoft Word document with four headings:  Vocabulary, State Scavenger Hunt, Seashells and Wildflowers.  Save your work to your (H:) drive and ask a teacher for permission to print.
